Biography
経歴
Jacques Lancelot was born in 1920 in Rouen, France. He studied at the Caen Conservatoire under Fernand Blachet, then at the Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris under Auguste Périer, obtaining the premier prix in 1939. He later studied chamber music with Fernand Oubradous.
From 1941 to 1950 he performed with the Lamoureux Orchestra, the Radio-Paris Orchestra, and the Société des Instruments à Vent, appearing as soloist under conductors including Jean Fournet and Willem Mengelberg.
He was a founding member of the French Wind Quintet with Jean-Pierre Rampal (flute), Pierre Pierlot (oboe), Gilbert Coursier (horn), and Paul Hongne (bassoon). He gave the world premieres of Jean Françaix's clarinet concerto and works by Jean Rivier, Roger Calmel, and others.
In 1973 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor. He taught at the Rouen Conservatoire from 1947 to 1988 and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon from 1980 to 1984. His pedagogical legacy, the "Lancelot school," is recognized for its distinctive aesthetic.

The achievements of Japanese clarinet performers and educators who studied under Lancelot remain remarkable to this day; aside from France, no other country can claim such a vibrant living presence of Lancelot's musical DNA.ランスロ氏の薫陶を受けた日本人クラリネット演奏家、教育家の現在にいたる活躍はめざましく、フランスをのぞけば、ランスロのDNAがこれほど活発に息づく国は、わが国のほかにはないといえます。

Colleagues in France who share the same ethos hold a competition under the same name in Rouen, in the country's northeast. We seek to collaborate and inspire one another with them, developing this event as a forum for pursuing Jacques Lancelot's musical heritage internationally. As a hallmark of holding the competition in Japan, we especially encourage participation from East Asia and aim to show our country's important role in the growth and spread of musical culture in that region.同じ精神を引き継ぐフランスの同門たちが、志を同じくして同名のコンクールをフランス北東部のルーアン市にて行っています。本コンクールは、彼らとの連携を図り互いに刺激し合うことで、ジャック・ランスロの音楽遺産を国際的に追究していくイベントとしても発展を目指します。また、日本開催の特徴として、特に東アジア地域からの参加を促し、同地域における音楽文化の成長と広がりにわが国が重要な役割を果たすことを示していきます。
